My first though was “Dang this has a screen!?”
I’m a huge fan of aluminum casing but this plastic casing keyboard from Epomaker- their Dynatab 75X really gives my aluminium boards a run for their money in terms of the typing experience. The actuation is super light and silky with some subtle variation in terms of tones depending on which key and finger you use to press the keys which is just extremely satisfying. I’m running the Sea Salt Silent switches on this board and I’d say it’s more of a creamy, slightly muted yet very satisfying sound without too much clack or thock. The Keycaps are quality double shot PBT and are cherry profile and do contribute to that ‘whole’ feeling of a quality board.
In this video I dive into the screen functionality which is the main point of difference of this unique board:
One other feature that is odd but interesting is that the legends are on the side of the keys. Once I’m in my typing rhythm this suits just fine but trying to place my hands on the right places initially and mistyping the first word seems to be a bit of a problem for my plebian touch typing skillset. But let’s see how this configuration and board perform in the typing speed (which will double as the sound test with a decent mic).
Here’s the result…
The board also comes with a kickstand, which I forgot to activate in the video. It actually makes seeing the legends substantially easier and I think it’s a more ergonomic position. Another handy feature is the hot-swappable switch sockets, though personally I think the switches on this board suit it perfectly already.
There are a bunch of LED presets I need to dive into further as well. I haven’t quite mastered this board yet fully but my favourite feature is the one where the text you type ends up on the screen in all of its dot matrix LED glory which is a cool enough feature to make this board my centrepiece for quite a while.
Epomaker DynaTab 75X- Verdict
Rating/Description | Stock | Modded | |
Looks | It looks a lot cooler and better proportioned once the screen is fired up. The Dot Matrix LED and ability to type into it is super cute and novel. The LED’s projecting through the transparent keycap legends are pretty awesome too and it looks great with the dark theme. Without the LED’s fired up the case and shape of the board looks a bit clunky and reminds me of some kind of an 80’s TI Calculator or something along those lines. | 3.75/5 | 3.75- 4/5 depending on how creative you are |
Feel | The board is quite lightweight but it doesn’t feel hollow to type on. The keycaps are good quality. | 3.75/5 | 3.75/5 |
Value | The board is chock full of features- all connectivity types (wireless, bluetooth, + wired) and is all in all a nice unit that is well put together. The case is probably the only component I would try to improve and reckon it could be a bit more robust and stylish. But for the price (which you can see on Amazon below), it’s a handy unit and a great choice for a budget entry level keyboard that you can really enjoy using. | 4/5 |
